I’m not a fan of stereotypes but today I created 3 categories for you :
1. You’re fit and active, you love your gym time and the outdoors but your neck/shoulder pain is putting a damper on your exercise routine.
2. Ever since you suffered a whiplash injury, your neck hasn’t been the same.
3. You like to read, watch tv, knit and make art, but the pain in your neck and shoulders take the fun out of your favorite activities.
Do you fit into any of these categories?
AND, do you see what’s common in these seemingly very different categories?
It’s the imbalance in the musculature of the neck:
Muscles can be strong and tight and weak and tight. For example in a cervical whiplash, the neck extensors are usually strong and tight. Releasing them (by getting a massage, a chiropractic adjustment or using a tennis ball on the painful area) without strengthening the opposing muscles could further destabilize your neck.
The same is true for the other 2 categories. In this day and age we all tend to stick our head forward as we drive, watch tv, read, text, etc. If you overuse and abuse your neck when you work out or when you enjoy your hobbies, you’ll have the same type of pain as the whiplash person!
I say, let’s address that muscle imbalance right here and right now!
