Have you noticed you have a preferred side? Well, most people do. You may solely chew on the right side, or sleep on the left. Or you always hold the phone to your right ear.
Are you curious if this preference affects the rest of your body?
Let’s do a test!
Stand up and shift your weight to one side. You will naturally go to your preferred side. Now try the other side! Does it feel unnatural? Uncomfortable?
If you like to stand on your right side, you will usually have a
- Right hip lateral shift
- Right hip hike
- Curved spine
- Right lower shoulder
- Left neck side bend
There’s nothing inherently wrong with this posture, but if you constantly shift only to one side as you sit/stand, over time your muscle tissues and nervous system will adapt to this preferred position.
Common pain areas from side-shifting:
- neck
- shoulder
- back (upper/mid/low)
- hip (Sciatica)
- knee
- foot
These side-shifting habits can end up leaking into other movement patterns and show up for example as a shift to one side when you squat!
That’s why balancing out your alignment at rest is so important! Poor posture and alignment will generally lead to less than ideal movement patterns (especially for movements that require you to be symmetrical – squats / deadlifts / lunges etc.
