When Your Hips are out of Alignment

Do you have foot, knee, hip back or neck pain? Maybe a combination of those?

For many people hip alignment issues are a major cause of pain.

Pelvic misalignment does not happen overnight.

The first telltale sign of a hip issue is one leg shorter than the other.  Many people think that they must have been born this way and just never noticed, or that the problem is in their feet.  However, poor pelvic alignment is often the culprit.

In biomechanical terms, when your hips are in alignment, they are not rotated forward or back or favouring one side. When your hips fall out of alignment, they move out of a centred position, and force the spine and lower limb to compensate.
Some of the main causes of hips being out of alignment are:
Uneven weight distribution
Scoliosis
Carrying bags on one side
Pregnancy
Crossing or folding legs
Past injuries
Stretching imbalances
Favoring one side
Poor footwear
Poor core strength
Collapsed arches
Since the pelvis is the center of the body and it bridges the upper and lower body, when it’s out of alignment, it will cause changes up and down the kinetic chain.
On the image below you can see how an imbalanced pelvis will cause changes in the spine, how it unlevels the shoulders, makes one arm look longer than the other, causes one knee to cave in and makes the arch in the foot collapse.
So what’s the solution to the problem?
Good news is, with the right type of exercises many of these issues can be addressed.
