It’s Not The IT Band’s Fault!

Do you have lateral knee pain that gets worse when you’re squatting, biking, running or even when you’re rising from sitting to standing?

Have you been told you have IT Band syndrome?

Have you been watching YouTube videos on how to release your IT Band?

Look no further, because it is likely that your knee pain is not your IT Band’s fault!

Look at the image below.

You can see that the model has a normal arch on one side and a flattened arch on the other side. The flattened arch causes the Tibia to rotate inwards, which causes the knee and the hip to follow and rotate inwards as well.

The main anatomical function of the IT Band is to slow down medial displacement of the knees (when the knees move towards each other, aka knock knees)

If you’re constantly asking your IT Band to work and you’re never giving it a break, there’s no wonder it gets irritated and painful.

So what’s the solution to the problem?
I wouldn’t recommend singling out the knee and IT Band. The knee is a hinge joint that’s stuck between the foot and the hip.
Knee problems don’t stem from the knees.
Knees hurt because the feet and ankles are stiff and immobile and the hips are weak and unstable.
Knees only do what the hips can control and the foot will allow.
The knee is the victim, and you have to look elsewhere if you want to find the culprit.
