Forward Head Posture and Back Pain

Sep 3, 2023Health, Neck Pain, Shoulder Pain, Upper Back Pain

One of the most commonly seen postural dysfunctions is Forward Head Posture FHP). I believe we all have it to a certain degree, since we live in a forward facing world. FHP means your head is ahead of your body, as opposed to sitting perfectly over your shoulders.

The problem with FHP is that it increases the weight load your back and neck muscles have to carry and support. It causes certain muscles to become locked long and others locked short.

Sooner than later this postural deviation manifests in neck and back pain.

First take a look at the image below to have a better understanding of what FHP looks like.

So what’s the solution to the problem?
If you want to eliminate your neck/back pain caused by FHP, first you need to learn which muscles are locked short and which ones are locked long.(you can see that on the image above)
THEN THIS IS WHAT YOU SHOULD DO NEXT TO ELIMINATE THE PAIN:
1. Strengthen the locked long muscles with targeted exercises
2. Relieve the tightness in the locked short muscles through soft tissue release techniques and stretching.
