DO YOU SLOUCH WHEN YOU SIT?
Standing puts the least amount of pressure on the discs, but with most people sitting all day (at work, then watching TV at home) you are putting your low back at risk of injury.
Most people posteriorly tilt their pelvis when sitting, which flattens out the lumbar curve, putting an increased and uneven load on the intervertebral discs.
When you slouch forward and flex the lumbar vertebrae, this position doubles disc pressure and puts strain on the low back muscles. We can see that the disc pressure is directed posteriorly, where most of disc herniations happen. So the key is to learn how to sit properly to take that pressure off your discs.
Next week I will continue exploring this topic and send you more information about proper sitting posture.
