As I was organizing my client files today, all the sudden I realized, how many mothers and mothers to-be I’ve helped over the years, all with the same symptoms….sudden onset of lower back and hip pain.
They all came to me puzzled by the nagging discomfort, many of them experiencing severe, chronic pain for the first time in their lives.
If you’re a mother or you’re expecting a baby and you’re experiencing the same symptoms, I want you to know, there’s an explanation and an easy solution for your problem!
First of all, let’s shed light on the causes of the problem!
If you’re pregnant and you’re hurting in the hip/lower back:
There are 3 curves in your spine – in the neck, mid-back and in the lower back. As your belly is growing, the curve in your lower back exaggerates and adds excess pressure to the joints.
You may also experience pain higher up, in the mid-upper back and in the neck, because of the increasing weight of the breasts.
If you’ve already given birth (even if it was years ago) and your back pain has never gone away or you only started experiencing it after child birth, I want you to know, you’re not alone!
You’ve been picking up your child and carrying him/her around on your hip on and off, often times for several hours a day. You probably don’t notice that you shift your hip to the side and hike one side up, so your child can sit comfortably on your hip and in your arm. This causes shortening in one side of the lower back and lengthening in the other. This imbalance ALWAYS manifests in pain!
By the time the 2nd or 3rd baby comes along, you poor mother find yourself in constant agony! You’re scared to pick up your 4 year old, you’re afraid to twist, you can’t chase your toddler without the fear of throwing out your back!
But moms can’t get sick, because they are the engine of the family, so you power through! You deserve time to take care of your body and you must carve out that time, because things could get much worse! You don’t want to end up with a herniated disk and a lifetime of back problems, only because you think you don’t have the time now!
