If you’re suffering from lower back pain, it’s important to find out, whether you are sensitive to flexion or to extension.
Why?
Because depending on which group you belong to, you benefit from different types or rehab exercises.
So if you have a worsening of symptoms with sitting and bending, and an improvement of symptoms with standing and walking, then you’ll benefit from extension based exercises.
Does it mean you never again will tolerate sitting and bending forward?
The goal is to temporarily avoid or modify flexion based activities, while introducing more extension type movements. The key word here is “temporarily”. People are often frightened into thinking that they have to avoid sitting and bending for their entire lifetime after a backpain incident. This is not the case.
So if you notice that your symptoms are indeed worse with sitting or bending, do a little less of both for a while and incorporate extension type exercises into your exercise routine.
Here is a great extension based exercise for you to practice!
Then, if you notice your symptoms improve after you incorporated this exercise, do a little more extension based strengthening for a while. Eventually, you should be able to go back to your normal routine without worrying whether you’re flexing or extending.
