Let me give you the short story of how my client Sandy threw out her lower back…The reason I’m sharing this with you is because this silly injury happens so often and I want you to prevent this from happening to you.
Sandy was painting her house and lifted up a 5 gallon paint bucket, then all the sudden she felt a sharp, stabbing pain in the left side of her lower back. As it turns out, the problem wasn’t the weight of the bucket, but rather her technique…
This is what happened:
She bent over to pick up the bucket and put it into the back of her car. What’s wrong with that, right? Seemingly, nothing….But Sandy should’ve bent her knees and hinged her upper body forward to pick up the paint! The power in her hips would’ve made it safe for her back.
So what is the HIP HINGE?
It’s a fundamental movement that would’ve saved Sandy’s lower back…. In day to day movement, the hinge helps you move safely and distribute stress between your back and your hips.
IF you have low back pain, it’s mandatory for you to learn the hip hinge and use it in your daily acivities (when you tie your shoe laces or pick up something from the floor)
If you can’t hinge, you have no choice but to flex through your spine. And while that’s fine when you tie your shoe laces, it may leave you injured when you move your couch or a 5 gallon paint bucket.
I want you to find opportunities in your day to practice the hip hinge! You will be surprised how many times daily life requires you to do it!
Here are some examples:
- sitting down in a chair/sofa
- gardening
- picking up a child or groceries
- squatting/jumping in an exercise class
Do you live in a vicious cycle of injuries and pain? Would you like to learn how to organize yourself and move efficiently so that you reduce your injury risk?
