In an ideal world, your shoulders would be the most mobile joint in your body. Yet, your shoulders are stiff, achy and are prone to injuries.
So, how did you get here? How did your most mobile joints become your stiffest joints? I apologize if I’m repeating myself but there’s nothing new under the sun. Your shoulders are stiff because of bad posture, poor movement habits and overall weakness.
And the more you baby them, the weaker and more dysfunctional they get. Therefore, I highly recommend that you start working on your strength.
One of the easiest ways to start is through isometric contractions. An isometric contraction is one where the muscle contracts without moving. If you currently have shoulder pain, you’ll find that you tolerate isometric contractions better than active movement.
As you’ll see in the video, I’m going to start out with isometric contractions, then I’ll progress and add some movement as well, so you can take things to the next level as you get stronger and experience less pain.
It is important to remember that having pain with these exercises is actually okay and safe, as long as it is mild and tolerable and doesn’t lead to significant increases in pain for hours afterward or into the next day.
